While listening to a short Hitchens blurb about religion, it just dawned on me that the 80s joke about desert travel very succinctly summarizes human evolution with anvil being religion (and other such pareidolic brain worms).
Yeah, sure, the anvil does have a very narrow specific and useful purpose, but to use it in all areas of life is a bit like seeing everything as a nail when wielding a hammer, especially a very old rusty cracked bloodied hammer that should have been stored in a police evidence locker or a museum long long ago.
