European Super League
Apr. 19th, 2021 08:57 amWhat a bombshell got dropped yesterday. 12 football teams (and 3 to be announced) will form a Super League to play midweek: 6 from UK (Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City, Man United and Tottenham), 3 from Spain (Real, Barca, Atletico) and 3 from Italy (Juventus, AC Milan, Inter). Its is unlikely that any German teams will join (as fans have actual input). Apparently JPMorgan Chase is a major financier behind this enterprise: US$5B. UEFA, FIFA and the national football associations have pledged a scorched earth fight. This is as big if not bigger than the World Series Cricket breakaway in late '70s. Apparently, UEFA will announce a revised Champions League today to address some of the complaints and provide a compromise with the breakaway clubs via a Swiss-model starting in 2024/25.
