I find it quite ironic that dark matter is a necessary crutch to fit actual observations within the current Newton-Einstein non-unified understanding of the universe. In other words, dark matter is not that different conceptually from invisible pink unicorns.

Reminds me of the "retrograde motion" theory of the planets movement that was invented to make the model of the earth as the center of the universe fit. What was needed was a simpler model, which is possibly true in this case as well.

A simpler model might be closer to the truth, but given our limitations (temporal, spatial) we might never find it. I admit that we are getting closer and faster to deconstructing ourselves and the universe we live in, but we can't go back in time and that will forever limit our knowledge to studying the 'footprints' of the Big One (whatever that is: The Big Bang, A [Mis]Creator, etc). It's like guessing the color of T-Rex's eyes or its intelligence by studying its bones.
